Governor Rhoden and GOED Announce Community of the Year and Excellence in Economic Development Award Winners

PIERRE, S.D. – Governor Larry Rhoden announced the recipients of the 2026 Governor’s Conference on Economic Development awards, recognizing outstanding leadership and community impact across the state. Vermillion has been named Community of the Year, and Dana Dykhouse has been honored with the Excellence in Economic Development Award.

“South Dakota has some excellent leaders and communities who help keep us Open for Opportunity. These awards recognize the leaders and communities who drive South Dakota forward,” said Governor Larry Rhoden. “Vermillion’s commitment to growth and collaboration and Dana Dykhouse’s leadership in strengthening our workforce reflect the innovation and dedication that keep South Dakota strong.”

The Excellence in Economic Development Award recognizes Dykhouse for his leadership in workforce development and long-standing contributions to South Dakota’s economic success. He co-founded the Build Dakota Scholarship program, helping thousands of students prepare for high-demand careers, and has supported economic growth through civic leadership and partnership with GOED.

The Community of the Year Award recognizes Vermillion for its collaborative approach to growth and investment in its future. The community expanded childcare access, raised nearly $1.6 million through a capital campaign, and supported major business expansions, including Cypress Rail and Masaba. Continued housing development and continued community investment are positioning Vermillion for long-term success.

“Strong communities and dedicated leaders are essential to South Dakota’s economic success,” said Commissioner Bill Even. “Vermillion and Dana Dykhouse have each played an important role in advancing economic opportunity, and we are proud to recognize their impact.”

The annual conference brings together economic development leaders from across the state to share strategies, celebrate successes, and advance South Dakota’s economic future.
